Overview:

Chris Matthews is a big receiver but he really doesn’t play like one. He does have good hands and body control but for his size I want to see him be more physical. He doesn’t do a good job of fighting for position and isn’t a natural at attacking the ball. He shows flashes that he can do it, but too many times he doesn’t. He is a similar prospect to David Nelson of Florida from last year.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Has outstanding size at 6’5 218
- Can be deceptive on the go route
- Has a solid pair of hands
- Doesn’t allow the ball to get into his body
- Shows the ability to high point the ball and make the catch
- He adjusts fairly well to poorly thrown passes
- Size gives him advantage as a run blocker
- Could be a great weapon in the redzone

Negatives

- Long strider with little burst
- Slow and lumbering out of his breaks
- Will struggle to create separation in the NFL
- Isn’t as physical as his size would indicate
- May have some issues tracking the deep ball
- Doesn’t attack the ball down field or fight for position
- Isn’t a threat after the catch due to lack of short area quickness
- Rounds his cuts and takes too many false steps
