Athleticism:
A poor overall athlete who lacks balance and fluidity. Does not posses the range to make plays sideline-to-sideline and can be outpaced to the edge by most backs. Has tight hips and really struggles to change directions in space.
Grade: 1.5
Instincts:
Inconsistent in this area and will bite on fakes. Plays very aggressive and at times will give him a head start in making the play but other times he ends up completely out of position. Does a good job of reading screens and going out quickly to make the play. Gets sucked in by play action far too often and can be late to react to draws or reverses.
Grade: 2.0
Point of Attack:
Likes to attack the line of scrimmage and shows the ability to take on and shed blocks from time to time. However, very inconsistent and needs to work on his technique. Most of the time he’ll just run into lineman but not do anything once he gets there. Can be easily redirected and lacks the agility to slip blocks regularly. Takes poor angles and fails to keep contain on certain plays. Needs to gain upper body strength.
Grade: 2.0
Coverage:
Holds his own in coverage despite being a limited athlete. Likes to get his hands on receivers coming through his zone and rarely lets players get a clean release on him. Will get eaten up by quicker players and struggles mightily against shiftier players. Has the ability to break up passes and will do so without interfering. Can be late to react and often stumbles out of his breaks because he lacks overall fluidity in his hips.
Grade: 2.0
Pass Rush:
Usually comes through unblocked but good at finding open creases. Plays with leverage and attacks the shoulder of lineman. Lacks the speed to threaten off the edge and too stiff to be a consistent threat. Doesn’t possess good closing speed and quarterbacks will be able to evade him once he gets into the backfield.
Grade: 1.5
Tackling:
A fierce tackler who comes in with a full head of steam. Has some pop as a tackler. Ducks his head at times and will miss. Will have a tough time tackling in space. Fails to break down and can be easily side stepped. Has to play more disciplined and do a better job of wrapping up when he tackles.
Grade: 2.0
Intangibles:
Team leader and won MWC DPOY 2 years in a row. Suffered severe injuries as a child in a car accident that limited him to being a kicker for his first few years of high school ball. Kept working and getting better and now has a chance to get drafted in the NFL. Had shoulder surgery in 2010 but never missed a game. Likely limited to playing inside in a 3-4 scheme as he lacks the range to make plays consistently on the outside.
Grade: 3.0
Outlook:
Carder is a nice story and a great leader but has limited upside in the NFL. He’s also limited to playing inside, preferably in the 3-4. Should be a reserve at the next level and special team player. However, will likely never be an adequate starter in the NFL.

You must have been watching a different Tank Carder then I have for 2 years. I remember the play that turned me on to him last year. It was an option & he stuck with the Q.B. closing on him until the Q.B. tossed to the R.B. Not only did Tank change direction just fine he hit the R.B. just as the ball got there tackling him for a loss. His instinct were/are amazing. I’ve every can I could catch (not a TCU fan)and was usually not dissappointed. He has great drop baack into coverage instincts too. There is a reason he won MWC DPOY 2 yrs now. He is a play maker
“I’ve every can I could catch” sorry dont know what happen there. should be “I’ve watched every game that I could catch”
I gotta say I disagree. I just was never impressed with his play, he’s average at best as a prospect and can’t see him being a successful starter. Not the first time someone’s disagreed with me though. We’ll see how he does in the NFL.
Interesting to note that Wes Bunting, director of scouting at National Football Post, reported that many scouts had a late round/UDFA grade on him from what he gathered at the East-West Shrine Game.
