Pass Blocking:

Played left tackle at Midwestern State but likely to kick inside to guard in the pros. Shows a good first step and is nimble on his feet for a big guy. Has the ability to mirror pass-rushers and wasn’t challenged too much by speed in DII. However, lacks the great lateral agility and kick slide to stay at tackle in the NFL. Routinely plays too high and despite being strong can be pushed back rather easily. Needs to stay compact and not let lineman get under him. Has a great knee bend and displays good flexibility as well.

Grade: 2.5

Run Blocking:

A dominant run blocker who can already be classified as a mauler. I say that because he can dominate players despite poor technique. Is very quick off the snap but can zone out at times. Plays with strong hands and can generate an excellent push in the run game. However, gets sloppy with his hands from time to time and tries to bully defensive players too much. Will overextend and shove defenders which can easily be avoided by NFL players. Can get to the second level and pancake linebackers.

Grade: 3.5

Mobility:

Displays excellent mobility. Very nimble on his feet and looks comfortable in space. Great at pulling. Is quick to find the hole and good at getting contact on defenders often driving them completely out of the way or pancaking them. Good at getting to the second level but must do a better job of playing more under control when he gets there.

Grade: 4.0

Technique:

Has all the tools, and the attitude, but has sloppy technique. Has a nice natural bend and possesses great flexibility. Plays with heavy hands but must do a better job of actually getting contact. Will overextend at times due to his aggressiveness and either whiff or hug defenders. Needs to do a better job of staying compact in pass protection. Gets upright and exposes to much of his body and defenders can work the bull-rush on him. Got away with a lot of things due not playing against the greatest competition in DII. Will need some coaching up before he can dominate consistently at the next level.

Grade: 2.0

Mean Streak:

Definitely a mean player. Maybe too mean. Routinely finishes his blocks and doesn’t stop until his man is on the ground it seems. Is always looking to hit someone and seems to love contact. Can be too aggressive and can overextend and whiff when trying too hard to make contact at the second level.

Grade: 5.0

Intangibles:

Went to JUCO before starting his final 2 years at Midwestern State. Obviously an issue with the level of competition he faced. Is raw but has all the tools needed to succeed. Has some questions surrounding his intelligence. Will have some mental lapses on the field. Has no major injury concerns or off-field issues.

Grade: 2.5

Outlook:

I think Amini Silatolu is too raw to go in the first round. While the potential is there, there’s no guarantee with NFL coaching he will suddenly turn into the dominant blocker he is capable of becoming. He’s probably not best suited to start right away and he could have some struggles early in his career. However, if he does take well to coaching and does fix his technique issues, there’s no reason why he can’t eventually become one of the top guards in the league.
