Pass Blocking:

Possesses good athleticism which helps him a lot as a pass blocker. Is quick to get into his stance and has the agility and foot speed to deal with edge rushers. Has left tackle potential. However, he lacks strength and needs to get much stronger. He displays a nice bend and great flexibility initially but the longer he’s out on the edge the more prone he is to over-extending and bending at the waist. He reaches far too often and he can be beaten easily when he does. Lacks a strong punch and has to do a better job with his hands in pass protection.

Grade: 2.5

Run Blocking:

Not a dominant run blocker and not much of an in-line guy. At his best when he’s asked to seal and wall off defenders. Lacks the strength to consistently create a push as an in-line blocker. Reaches into his blocks too much and he gets off balance leaving him on the ground quite a bit. Does a better job with his hands in the run game though. Good on combination blocks and reaching the second level due to his athleticism.

Grade: 2.0

Mobility:

A good overall athlete and it shows when he’s in space. Has pretty quick feet and solid lateral agility. He can get to the second level and can find targets well. However, he also reaches for blocks when in space causing him to get off balance and whiff on blocks.

Grade: 3.5

Technique:

Main technique issue is bending at the waist. He displays a nice knee bend initially but he tends to reach on the edge and get off balance. He lacks strength so getting him off balance is asking for trouble. He doesn’t have a powerful punch and defenders can get under him in a hurry. Will stop his feet at times which also hurts him in pass protection.

Grade: 2.5

Mean Streak:

Doesn’t have much of a mean streak although he will occasionally show some flashes by giving an extra shove or two. However, just simply comes across as soft on tape. He lacks any power to his game and is never going to be a dominant run blocker.

Grade: 2.0

Intangibles:

A 3 year starter who was trusted to protect Andrew Luck. Praised for his character and work ethic. Seems to be too nice for a lineman. Has left tackle potential so he’s valued more than maybe he should be. Got destroyed by Nick Perry in his final season. Has no major injury concerns.

Grade: 2.5

Outlook:

Jonathan Martin is a guy who was over-rated throughout most of the season. There was a time when he was a top 10 pick. People have caught on though and now his stock is probably at an all time low. Of course he was probably seen this way all along by NFL teams but it took awhile for the media to catch up. I wouldn’t draft him in the 1st round and he’s likely to go in the 2nd on draft day. He’s a good athlete but he’s not elite. He still bends at the waist too much and lacks any power to his game whatsoever. He’s too much of a finesse blocker and some teams don’t like that which is why his stock is so low right now. While he does have the upside to be a starting left tackle, I don’t think he’ll ever be a great starter.
