Pass Blocking:
A solid pass blocker who displays adequate bend and flexibility. Isn’t overly quick to get into his stance and could have some issues with quicker, penetrating tackles. Has a good initial punch but he struggles to stay compact and often overextends. Could stand to add some strength through his lower body but shows the ability to anchor despite his shortcomings. Is pretty athletic and has the ability to mirror most pass-rushers when he keeps his balance.
Grade: 3.0
Run Blocking:
Has a nice first step as a run blocker and can fire out of his stance. Can generate a good push when he plays with a low pad level despite average strength. Pumps his feet and and can effectively drive lineman out of the way. Good down-blocker. Not as successful when he pops upright off the snap. Lacks the strength to compensate for playing with a poor pad level. Is sloppy with his hands and can struggle to sustain blocks. At times will just dip his head and try to move whatever is in his way. NFL lineman will have their way with him if he doesn’t get rid of that “method”.
Grade: 3.0
Mobility:
An above average athlete but certainly not in elite range. Looks good pulling but still whiffs too much in space. Tends to overextend or shove defenders and his hand placement is really poor. However, he displays above average agility and range for a guard. Is better on combination blocks when he can reach the second level quickly and make contact.
Grade: 3.0
Technique:
Undisciplined player who gets sloppy with his technique too often. There’s the problem of him putting his head down that needs to be fixed, and his overall hand placement is poor. He’ll hug lineman and expose his body. Struggles to sustain his blocks because of this and he also struggles latching onto targets at the second level. Has a solid knee bend but he does have a tendency to overextend and lean into his blocks which again hurts his ability to sustain blocks.
Grade: 2.0
Mean Streak:
Always looking to finish his blocks and certainly has some nastiness in him. Is always helping out teammates if he can’t find anyone to block. Will drive his man to the ground and make sure they won’t be getting back up. Loves contact.
Grade: 4.0
Intangibles:
A 3 year starter who started off his career as a right tackle at Pitt before kicking inside to guard party way through the 2010 season. Has a good motor on the field and is always looking to make a block. Missed time with a knee injury in 2011. Has some character concerns as he was cited for disorderly conduct in his first year at Pitt. Most recently, he was charged with public drunkenness, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct before the teams bowl game in 2012.
Grade: 2.0
Outlook:
Lucas Nix should be a solid mid-round pick who has the upside to be a starter down the line. He needs work on correcting his technique and should offer valuable depth for some team early on in his career before he can start. What’s troubling is his off-field issues. He’s probably off some teams boards for his run-ins with the law and it’s a shame because although he has upside, if he doesn’t get his act together he can fizzle out of the league or be a career journeyman.
