Overview:

Christian Ballard has heard his name mentioned as a possible surprise 1st round pick. I actually thought he could be one as well. However, after watching some tape of him it would be a mistake for any team to take him so early. He lacks strength and hes very weak at the point of attack. He gets pushed around inside too often and he is inconsistent getting off blocks. I really question where he’ll be able to play. He wouldn’t fit well as a 4-3 end because he not a good pass-rusher. He doesn’t really fit at 3-4 end either because he’s weak and he’ll be constantly over matched especially if the scheme calls for him to occupy blockers. I don’t know where he fits and he’s too big of a question mark to select early in the draft.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Great size, ideal for 3-4 scheme
- 3 year starter
- Pretty athletic, especially when playing inside against slower guards
- Moves well in space
- Shows the ability to shed blocks with his hands
- Good at penetrating and making stops in the back field
- Has flashed a swim and spin move
- Good tackler inside
- Has played all over the line at Iowa
- Versatile
- Team player

Negatives

- Lacks strength
- Weak at the point of attack
- Struggles mightily against double teams
- Doesn’t use his hand well to disengage and needs to be more consistent doing so
- Plays too high
- Lacks a great first step
- Offers very little as a pass-rusher
- Has no counter pass-rush moves
- Loses track of the ball on some plays
- Tweener with no true position
- May not be a perfect fit anywhere on the line

Overview:

Muhammad Wilkerson is getting some solid 1st round consideration and I’d say it’s well deserved. He has the potential to be a great 3-4 end because of his size and strength. He can occupy blockers and is tough player. He has to work on his technique, most notably his hand usage. He still struggles to shed blocks at times although he does have the ability. He may need some work but he can be a good player in the NFL.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Impressive size
- Good quickness off the snap
- Very strong
- Anchors really well
- Powerful bull-rush
- Flashes a nice swim move
- Does a good job against double teams
- Very disruptive inside
- Can penetrate but also take up multiple blockers
- Has violent hands
- Plays with a lot of toughness and has a good motor
- Versatile, played everywhere on the D-Line
- Can play DT in the 4-3 or DE in the 3-4
- Has a lot of potential

Negatives

- Doesn’t have many pass-rush moves
- If the bull-rush is stopped he won’t get anywhere
- Has to use his hands better to get off of blocks
- Gets too high out of his stance at times
- Can be too aggressive and over-run plays
- Needs to polish up his technique
- Didn’t face the greatest competition

Overview:

Cameron Heyward is a perfect fit as a DE in the 3-4 scheme. He’s strong and holds up well at the point of attack. He’s not much of a pass-rusher and his technique needs work, but he can be a good player at the next level. He has to work at getting off blocks better because that’s a part of his game where he still struggles. He doesn’t dominate as you expect a 4 year starter who is a potential 1st round pick would.

- Does a good job of keeping one arm free to make the tackle

- Struggles to get off blocks
- Has to use his hands better

- Only has the bull rush

- A bit stiff and won’t challenge lineman in the NFL on the edge
- Can over-pursue and take himself out of the play
- Instincts are pretty bad considering he’s a 4 year starter
- Has to play with better balance
- Has games where he disappears

Overview:

J.J. Watt has seen his stock soar and he is now a potential Top 15 pick. He’s a terrific athlete with great size. He hasn’t been playing DE for long but he already has a wide variety of moves and his non-stop motor will only help him at the next level. He’s strong and good at penetrating and making stops in the back field. He would fit well in a 3-4 scheme where he can rush up field. He still has to work on playing with better leverage and his overall technique. This is obviously gonna be the case since he doesn’t have much experience, but with his work ethic he should be able to overcome these issues.

- Great size and bulk with long arms
- Terrific athlete, blew up the combine
- Very productive
- Has a very quick first step
- Looks good rushing the passer
- Has a nice swim and inside move

- Doesn’t have great edge speed
- Lacks good flexibility in his hips to be a lethal pass-rusher
- Potential would be limited in a 4-3
- Won’t ever put up high sack numbers
