Chris Matthews

Projected: 7th-FA

Stats

2009 – 32 catches, 354 yards, 11.1 avg, 3 TD’s
2008 – JUCO
2007 – JUCO

Overview:

Chris Matthews is a big receiver but he really doesn’t play like one. He does have good hands and body control but for his size I want to see him be more physical. He doesn’t do a good job of fighting for position and isn’t a natural at attacking the ball. He shows flashes that he can do it, but too many times he doesn’t. He is a similar prospect to David Nelson of Florida from last year.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Has outstanding size at 6’5 218
- Can be deceptive on the go route
- Has a solid pair of hands
- Doesn’t allow the ball to get into his body
- Shows the ability to high point the ball and make the catch
- He adjusts fairly well to poorly thrown passes
- Size gives him advantage as a run blocker
- Could be a great weapon in the redzone

Negatives

- Long strider with little burst
- Slow and lumbering out of his breaks
- Will struggle to create separation in the NFL
- Isn’t as physical as his size would indicate
- May have some issues tracking the deep ball
- Doesn’t attack the ball down field or fight for position
- Isn’t a threat after the catch due to lack of short area quickness
- Rounds his cuts and takes too many false steps
- Limited upside

Randall Cobb Scouting Report

Randall Cobb

Height: 5’10
Weight: 191
College: Kentucky
40 Time: 4.45
Class: Junior
Stock:
Projected: 3rd Round

Stats

2010 – 84 catches, 1017 yards, 12.1 avg, 7 TD’s, 55 rushes, 424 yards, 7.7 avg, 5 TD’s
2009 – 39 catches, 447 yards, 11.5 avg, 4 TD’s, 94 rushes, 573 yards, 6.1 avg, 10 TD’s
2008 – 21 catches, 197 yards, 9.4 avg, 2 TD’s, 79 rushes, 316 yards, 4.0 avg, 7 TD’s

Overview:

Randall Cobb is a very versatile athlete that can contribute in many different ways. He’s played WR, RB and QB at Kentucky and is dangerous in the Wildcat. He best projects to a slot WR similar to Percy Harvin. Cobb is still inconsistent though and he doesn’t look like he will be the same superstar in the NFL. He drops some passes and is a poor route runner. He’s also not very physical going up to get the football. If he gets a lot of looks, like the Vikings do with Harvin, he should have similar success but he won’t be a bona fide slot receiver in the NFL.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Great athlete
- Has a good burst
- Dangerous after the catch
- Has a lot of suddenness to his game
- Shows the ability to extend his arms and pluck the ball
- Has the quickness to be a good route runner
- Can play RB in the Wildcat
- Very versatile
- Has experience returning kicks
- Big play threat best suited for the slot
- Tough and will lower his shoulder to pick up the 1st
- Hard worker
- High character player

Negatives

- Poor route runner
- Rounds a lot of his cuts
- More quick than fast
- Looks average running his routes
- Inconsistent hands
- Drops balls he shouldn’t
- Does a poor job of attacking the ball
- Isn’t the type of guy you throw a jump ball to
- Lacks vision as a runner
- Dances around too much and gets stopped in the back field a lot

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Speed: 3.5
Hands: 2.5
After Catch: 4.0
Body Control: 2.0

2007 – 94 att, 521 yards, 5.5 avg, 5 TD’s, 7 rec, 86 yards

Overview:

Derrick Locke created quite a buzz at the Senior Bowl with his performance. If you watched Locke before though, you shouldn’t have been surprised. Locke is not only quick, he is plain fast. I wouldn’t be surprised if he clocked in under a 4.30, surely a 4.35. He has great vision and his feet are so quick through the hole. He does have his limitations though. He’s rather small and has had some nasty injuries in the past. For a team that is looking for an explosive play maker and 3rd down back, he is a nice option in the middle rounds.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- 2 year starter in the SEC
- Incredible speed
- Outstanding suddenness to his game
- Can stop, start, and cut on a dime
- Great burst
- Has a 2nd gear to pull away from defenders at the 2nd level
- Great vision
- Quick feet and moves very well laterally to find a hole
- Soft hands out of the backfield
- Can be a threat on returns
- Dynamic player who can be used in many different ways
- Can make big plays

Negatives

- Slight frame
- Has some previous knee injuries(ACL/MCL)
- Won’t be able to carry the load at the next level
- Has a tendency to try to bounce everything outside
- Won’t break many tackles
- Limited to just a 3rd down back?
- Blocking will need a lot of work

Mike Hartline Scouting Report

Mike Hartline

Height: 6’5
Weight: 210
College: Kentucky
40 Time: 4.85
Class: Senior
Stock: Down
Projected: Undrafted

Stats

2010 – 268/405, 66.2%, 3178 yards, 7.8 YPA, 23 TD’s, 9 INT’s
2009 – 79/133, 59.4%, 802 yards, 6.0 YPA, 6 TD’s, 7 INT’s
2008 – 172/311, 55.3%, 1666 yards, 5.4 YPA, 9 TD’s, 8 INT’s
2007 – 4/6, 66.7%, 34 yards, 5.7 YPA, 0 TD’s, 1 INT

Overview:

Hartline was a big disappointment for Wildcat fans but he really turned it around his senior year. He matured as a QB and improved his play considerably. However, hold off on calling him a sleeper. He still has a lot of work to do to improve his game and any shot he had of getting drafted pretty much went away when he got arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct before Kentucky’s bowl game. Very stupid move on his part.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Great height
- Good athlete
- Can move outside of the pocket
- Throws well on the run
- Gets the ball out of his hands quickly
- Has experience taking snaps from under center
- Great senior year
- Showed he can improve and succeed
- Played against top competition

Negatives

- Too thin
- Poor accuracy
- Too often throws the ball to the receivers wrong shoulder and fails to lead them
- Arm strength is only average and he floats some passes
- Doesn’t go through his progressions well
- Often stares down his receivers
- Holds onto the ball too long
- Not good when pressured
- Bad footwork in his 3, 5 and 7 step drop backs from under center
- Doesn’t move his feet in the pocket
- Not much of a threat to complete any deep passes
- One year wonder?
- System may be designed to be QB friendly
- Arrested before his bowl game
