2011 Fantasy Football Deep Sleepers

As promised this is part 2 of my sleepers list. This list features players that are either not currently being drafted or are broder line draft picks. Most of these guys will probably be on the waiver wire at some point this season, but they have the potential to put your team over the top.

Colt McCoy – QB – Cleveland Browns

I actually like Colt McCoy more than Sam Bradford and talked about this at the end of last year. Bradford is very overrated in my opinion. He is the definition of a check down QB who rarely challenges defenses with difficult throws down the field. Colt McCoy has progressed a lot more than I thought he would solely because of his intangibles. He has lit it up this pre-season and has looked very good. “Blah blah blah it’s pre-season” you say. Trust me, when he starts putting together a couple of good games in the regular season you’ll be on the bandwagon too.

Projection: 3200 yards, 18 TD’s, 13 INT’s, 250 rushing yards, 1 TD, 2 FL

Cam Newton – QB – Carolina Panthers

So I didn’t like Cam Newton as a prospect but I believe the Panthers will be great this year. Doesn’t make much sense, I know, but I’ve got a hunch (and a trend to back it up). Newton might not “wow” you with his passing numbers but it’s his threat to run that makes him appealing to fantasy owners. He’s not a starter by any means but he is a good QB2 with upside and a possible bye week filler.

Projection: 2500 yards, 14 TD’s, 16 INT’s, 500 rushing yards, 5 TD’s, 4 FL

DeMarco Murray – RB – Dallas Cowboys

Murray hasn’t even played yet in the pre-season because (surprise!) he’s injured again. I’m a big fan of Murray so I still believe in him. Felix Jones is the starter but he’s injury prone himself and will likely need to surrender some carries if he wants to stay healthy. Tashard Choice doesn’t seem to be favored in Dallas either since he’s actually on the roster bubble for some reason. That only leaves DeMarco Murray to take some carries away from Felix. Murray is a talented pass-catcher and a home run threat so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is used a lot in the passing game. If Felix Jones ever gets hurt, Murray is a must add.

Projection: 400 rushing yards, 2 TD’s, 20 receptions, 200 yards, 1 TD, 1 FL Read more

Updates after Thursday nights games.

Stock Up

LeSean McCoy

Alright, so I’m not as worried about McCoy anymore. Ronnie Brown barely took touches away from him and McCoy was still used a TON as a receiver. Vick will be under a lot of pressure this year so McCoy should see a lot of passes in the flats.

Santana Moss

Grossman and Beck looked Moss’ way early and often. He’s clearly their best receiving option and they have to get him the ball. Even with 2 average QB’s, Moss should have a good year.

Tim Hightower

Sleeper alert. Hightower will be a beast this year. He tore up a pretty good Ravens defense and he will be the workhorse. All the carries + on the field on 3rd downs + goal line carries = fantasy beast. Target Hightower in the middle rounds of all of your drafts. Read more

Updates after Saturday nights games.

Stock Up

Ben Tate

Ben Tate is fighting for a roster spot after missing significant practice time again this year. Kubiak is frustrated but Ben Tate silenced him yesterday. He ran incredibly well and showed why he was taken in the 2nd round. He’ll likely still be listed behind Derrick Ward on the depth chart but his performance was promising. If he keeps it up he could get more and more touches in the regular season.

Pierre Thomas

Pierre Thomas is continuing to start for the Saints despite reports of Ingram looking amazing in camp. I guess it doesn’t matter who starts because it looks like the Saints will distribute carries evenly. At first I was expecting a 70-30 split in favor of Ingram but it seems it’s more like 60-40 in favor of Thomas while Ingram gets the goal line and short yardage carries.

Darrius Heyward-Bey

The Raiders are determined to put DHB in a position to succeed. He will be the starter going into the season although Moore and Murphy figure to be rotated in quite a bit. Still, Heyward-Bey looked good against the 49ers. He made a very nice catch on a back shoulder throw against double coverage. His 2nd catch was nice too as he had to go down and adjust to catching the pass. He’s not worth drafting but does seem to be coming along.

Denarius Moore

Moore once again had a great game. He’s not starting but the Raiders have to get him involved somehow. He even showed he could return kicks well. I don’t know if he will unseat former 1st rounder Heyward-Bey or promising 2nd year player Jacoby Ford as starters but he is certainly moving up ahead of Murphy and Schilens in the rotation. Fantasy Football Stock Up/Down August 20th

Updates from recent training camp news as well as the first batch of the week 2 pre-season games.

Stock Up

Beanie Wells

Looks like Ryan Williams will be out for the rest of the year with a serious knee injury. Beanie Wells is now on track to have a solid season but he always seems to disappoint. I’m boosting his stats, but at the same time I won’t go crazy with them.

Colt McCoy

I’m really close to saying Colt McCoy is for real. I know it’s pre-season but he looks so confident. He’s running that offense perfectly. His numbers actually should have been even better because of a couple of drops. He just looks confident and knows where the ball has to go every time. He’s a late round flier with upside to at least be a solid QB2.

Reggie Bush

So the Dolphins we’re serious when they said Bush would be their #1 guy. He looked pretty good yesterday but the injury concern is still there. At this point he has a lot of upside but you have to wonder how many games he will play. Read more

Some updates after the 1st week of pre-season games.

Stock Up

Colt McCoy

Arguable the most impressive player this past weekend. McCoy surprised me a lot with his play. He looked great. It’s one pre-season game but it’s good to see improvement. I’ll have to boost his projections if he continues to play well.

Santana Moss

Moss was heavily targeted in the Redskins pre-season game and with Cooley still out with an injury he’s  their only reliable target. He could be in for another fine season despite the poor QB play.

Javon Ringer

If you’ve followed me for a while you know I love Javon Ringer. He looked great again in the Titans pre-season opener and the more time Johnson misses the higher Ringer’s stock goes.

Greg Olsen

We can now confirm that Olsen will be heavily utilized in Carolina. Both Clausen and Newton looked their way often and he appears to be their go to guy. Read more
