Overview:

Andy Dalton is getting a lot of love from some draftniks but I don’t see what the hype is about. He is not worthy of a 2nd or 3rd round pick, which is where some project him. He has a weak arm, poor intermediate and down field accuracy, he needs to work on his drop back mechanics and he has a limited ceiling. I see him as a guy who can be a back-up in the NFL and get spot duty because he’s a smart player so he can succeed in a role where he just has to manage the offense. As a starter however, I don’t see much potential.

Blaine Gabbert Scouting Report

Blaine Gabbert

Height: 6’5
Weight: 235
College: Missouri
40 Time: 4.70
Class: Junior
Stock:
Projected: 1st Round

Stats

2010 – 301/475, 63.4%, 3186 yards, 6.7 YPA, 16 TD’s, 9 INT’s
2009 – 262/445, 58.9%, 3593 yards, 8.1 YPA, 24 TD’s, 9 INT’s
2008 – 5/13, 38.5%, 43 yards, 3.3 YPA

Overview:

Blaine Gabbert could be the first QB drafted this year. He’s got a lot of the things you look for in a franchise QB but he does have some question marks (almost all of the QB’s this year do). His pocket poise is poor and he struggles when pressured. His footwork needs work, especially his drop back mechanics, and he needs to spend a lot of time in the film room and making sure he goes through his progressions. He’s got potential, but he has to put in the work. Reminds me of Sam Bradford. For what it’s worth, I didn’t think Sam Bradford would have the success he’s having.

Scouting Report:

Positives

- Prototypical QB size
- Good athlete
- Good arm strength
- Puts a lot of zip on short and intermediate passes
- Can throw the deep out
- Throws timing routes well
- Accurate on short and intermediate routes
- Has a quick release
- Can tuck the ball and run
- Decent speed
- Keeps his eyes down field when scrambling
- Throws well on the run
- Does a good job of throwing the ball where only his guy can get it
- Good leader
- Smart player

Negatives

- Only a 2 year starter
- Stats regressed his Junior year
- Plays in a goofy spread offense
- Rarely goes under center
- Footwork needs work on his drops
- Isn’t asked to go through a lot of reads in his offense
- Needs to do a better job of throwing the ball away when no ones open
- Accuracy is inconsistent due to footwork issues
- Terrible pocket poise
- Will scramble and get happy feet in a perfect pocket
- Struggles with the deep ball
- Will take time to adjust to the NFL

2007 –  5/10, 50%, 40 yards, 4.0 YPA, 16 rushes, 103 yards, 6.4 avg, 3 TD’s

Overview:

Cam Newton may have the highest potential out of any player in this years draft. The problem is he has a ton of work to do to even come close to achieving all of it. He is raw as a passer in all facets of the game. Poor footwork, poor accuracy, isn’t asked to make many reads etc. Combine that with his arrogant attitude and the whole fiasco with his dad and I see bust written all over this guy. Buyer beware.

Scouting Report:

- Hard to bring down in the open field
- Keeps his eyes down field when scrambling
- Great burst

2007 – 132/298, 44.3%, 1787 yards, 6.0 YPA, 10 TD’s, 18 INT’s

Overview:

If you’re looking for a late-round sleeper QB prospect, Nathan Enderle is your guy. He had a great Junior season but followed it up with a poor Senior year. The talent on his team did drop off and Enderle was not able to get back on track. He has all of the tools to be a great NFL QB, he just needs to be coached up because his technique needs some work. I think if he was surrounded by better talent, he would be pretty successful.

Scouting Report:

- Will take a hit to make the throw
- Does a good job of feeling pressure
- Gets rid of the ball on time
- Solid arm, can make every throw
- Flashes great accuracy but needs to be more consistent
- Throws well on the run
- Was not surrounded by a lot of talent at Idaho

Negatives

- Footwork needs work in the pocket
- Gets happy feet when no one is open
- Drop back isn’t smooth and needs refinement
- Throws off balance too much and it hinders his accuracy
- Struggles with ball placement at times
- Tries to thread the needle too much

Ryan Mallett Character Concerns

Just got word of some breaking news. Apparently Ryan Mallett has been seeing using cocaine and marijuana. Check out the link for more information. If this is true, it could have a huge effect on his draft stock.
