Overview:

Tolzien is an average QB who got his first starting experience last year with the Badgers. On tape he appears very average. He is good in most areas but he doesn’t really stand out in any. He does have some issues that are typical from inexperienced QB’s. He needs to do a better job of going through his progressions as well as his decision making. He normally takes what the defense gives him and doesn’t force anything. When however he does have to throw down field to get his team to come back from behind, his deficiencies are glaring. He stares down WR’s and when they’re running intermediate routes, it’s a lot easier for DB’s to catch on and jump their routes. He will make throws that he shouldn’t and it usually leads to an interception. Granted, this was his first year starting so he is obviously still learning. How well he performs during his season year will determine if he is a late-round, #3 NFL QB, or if he is a middle round potential back-up in the NFL. Either way, I can’t see Tolzien starting for an NFL team anytime soon.

- Will take a hit standing in the pocket
- Has a good feel for the blitz and knows when to get rid of the ball
- Great job of planting and stepping through his throws
- Good zip on his passes
- Good accuracy
- Decent mobility

Negatives

- Only average size
- Only a 2 year starter
- Sidearm delivery with a low release point
- Needs to do a better job of scanning the field and going through his progressions
- Decision making needs work
- Does not make very many difficult throws, usually takes what the defense gives him
- When forced to go down field, his lack of decision making shows as he forces passes
- Struggles with his footwork when he has to go through his reads
