- Courtney Smith is looking really bad. Curtis Brown came up fast to make a play on him and prevent the completion.

- DeMarcus Love false starts.

- McElroy throws too high for Courtney Smith and the pass is incomplete.

- Hankerson does a good job of coming back to the ball and shielding Wright away.

- Colin McCarthy makes a nice hit on Locke.

OL vs. DL 1 on 1′s

- Pernell McPhee beat Lee Ziemba both times easily.

- Derek Sherrod beat Allen Bailey. Bailey got off-balance and fell.

- Rodney Hudson did a very good job on Cedric Thornton. Great anchor.

- Phil Taylor beats Hudson next rep though. Great quickness for his size.

- Hudson then holds off Jarvis Jenkins with another stout anchor.

- O’Dowd got too high and Thornton pushed him back easily.

- Allen Bailey was able to beat O’Dowd with his quickness.

- Watkins struggled a bit against McPhee but held off Thornton.

- DeMarcus Love easily took KJ Wright to the ground who didn’t look good with his hand on the ground.

- James Carpenter easily handled Allen Bailey. Bailey was slow off the line and Carpenter mirrored him well.

WR/TE vs. CB/S 1 on 1′s

- Jock Sanders is quick but top end speed is average. Marcus Gilchrist stuck with him.

- DeAndre McDaniel with great coverage on Stocker.

- Greg Salas makes a nice catch with his hands.

- Jock Sanders takes too long to break down and cut.

- Wright has tight hips and let Salas make the catch in press coverage.

Overall Thoughts

This practice had a bit of a quicker pace than the last one I saw. No one really stood out a lot today. Hankerson continued to play well but he did have 1 drop. Greg Salas also looked good. I have to say I’ve been very impressed with Derrick Locke. He is extremely quick but also has that 2nd gear to run away from people. Size is a big knock on him and his ability to stay healthy has been questioned, but he should be a good 3rd down back at the next level.

Lee Ziemba continued to struggle as he is still playing too high and struggles to get his hands on defenders. DeMarcus Love has been pretty unimpressive. He is getting looks pretty much only at Guard and he is struggling. Allen Bailey is also not showing any improvement in his pass-rushing technique. He still uses his hands poorly and doesn’t have a true position. He is looking more and more like a mid-round pick as opposed to a first rounder.

I may not be able to catch the full practice tomorrow so this may be my last report until the game. For more coverage I highly recommend http://www.sidelinescouting.com/ Their staff is down at the Senior Bowl and have great coverage.

Senior Bowl: South Practice #2

Very limited coverage today and the South team didn’t look like they had the same pace as the North side. Regardless, here are some quick notes I took.

11 on 11 Drills

- Derrick Locke looked very explosive and made some very fast cuts.

- Andy Dalton throws a very poor pass on a short screen play to the WR.

- Anthony Allen tried to run over Shareece Wright and Wright just threw him down.

- Greg McElroy throws a nice pass to Hankerson with bodies all around him in the pocket.

- Colin McCarthy took a bad angle against a run and pretty much took himself out of the play.

- Noel Devine’s size is pretty comical among all the players in practice. On one play he was barely touched between the tackles and still fell down. This is in a non-tackle drill.

OL vs. DL 1 on 1′s

- Phil Taylor just muscled Kirkpatrick and pushed him back in OL drills. Kirkpatrick did a good job on him the 2nd time placing his hands well and anchoring.

- Danny Watkins did a great job on Chris Neild and stuck with him. Watkins mirrored him well. Neild looked really bad there.

- James Carpenter looked really strong and stood his ground against Sam Acho.

- Rodney Hudson with a great anchor against Allen Bailey and stopped him in his tracks.

- O’Dowd got beat by Jenkins. Too slow and got too high. Jenkins killed him again the 2nd time.

- Lee Ziemba was a bit too high and used his hands poorly against Cedric Thornton.

- Clint Boling did a pretty good job against Brooks Reed sticking with his counter move and displaying good strength.

- Phil Taylor beats DeMarcus Love both times. Love looked too slow and was bull rushed by Taylor straight back.

- Neild is by far the worst player in this drill.

- Danny Watkins showing a bit of a mean streak in this drill. Got into it with a couple of defenders and gave a little extra block on each play.

- Sherrod looked ok against Acho.

- James Carpenter struggled a bit against Acho.

- Pernell McPhee beat Ziemba easily with an outside fake. Ziemba couldn’t get his hands on him.

- Ziemba plays way too high. He routinely gets pushed back into the backfield.

- Boling did a good job against Allen Bailey twice. Didn’t let him get anywhere.

WR vs CB 1 on 1′s

- Jeremy Kerley made a very nice diving catch on Wright. Great hands.

- Marcus Gilchrist playing way too soft and gives up an easy completion.

- Leonard Hankerson with a very nice route and nice catch.

- Kerley ran a very nice route and beat Wright deep.

- Courtney Smith tried to run a double move but didn’t get much separation on DeMarcus Van Dyke who stuck with him well.

- Hankerson with another nice catch on a high throw.

- Kerley looks great running routes. Makes very sharp and quick cuts.

- Dalton has missed on a few passes in 1 on 1′s but he’s had some crisp passes as well. Inconsistent throughout the drill.

- Greg Salas makes a great catch on Johnny Patrick in press coverage.

- Courtney Smith drops a pass. Good coverage by Patrick though.

- Hankerson has really good hands. Wright looks a bit lost in coverage and needs a lot of work on his footwork.

Overall Thoughts

It was a limited look like I said, but still there we’re some guys making noise. Both Baylor players, Phil Taylor and Danny Watkins, looked good in the OL/DL drills. Taylor looked very strong and that  frame is not at all flabby as you would expect. Jeremy Kerley and Leonard Hankerson both looked great. Hankerson ran very nice routes and got out of his breaks cleanly while maintaining his speed. Kerley was blowing by people with his quickness and his routes. He looked like a savvy route runner and also displayed great hands.

One guy that looked pretty bad today was Lee Ziemba. He was routinely playing too high and struggled with his hand placement. Defenders would just get under him and drive him back. Allen Bailey did not show much improvement in his hand usage which was the biggest knock on him. He routinely just ran into the OT full speed and while he did look very strong, once the OL was able to anchor and get their hands on him he went nowhere. Chris Neild looked like a boy amongst men in OL/DL drills. It’s apparent Noel Devine won’t be much more than a 3rd down back or a guy that can come in and catch a few passes and get work in space. He looked incredibly tiny and had some difficulty running between the tackles. Shareece Wright was the worst of the CB’s. He doesn’t have great footwork and he struggled with his transition. His hips also appeared to be stiff and receivers had no problem getting open on him. Courtney Smith is a small school guy that got invited so he has a chance to make the most of his opportunity. Unfortunately, he didn’t look that great. He struggled to get separation and dropped 2 balls.

This was my first look at the South team and I wanted to see how good Hankerson and Kerley looked. They we’re definitely the real deal and hopefully I can get some reports on tomorrows practice as well.

Senior Bowl: North Practice #1

I’ll be able to watch some of the practices this week on NFL Network. Whenever I get the chance I’ll make sure to post notes on who looked good and who didn’t.

OL Blocking Drills

- Interesting that in the first walk through, Carimi is working at LG.

- Kevin Kowalski didn’t look to be very strong. He struggled to push back some of the lineman in one drill.

- Jason Pinkston was playing with great leverage and had good strength. He was moving people around and at the same time was hard to push back.

RB/TE vs LB/S 1 on 1′s

- Mike McNeill dropped a pass in 1 on 1 drills.

- Lance Kendricks with a very nice move to get open on Lefeged.

- Lawrence Wilson made a nice play to break on the ball and knock it away.

- Da’Rel Scott blew by Herzlich for a deep route. Nice over the shoulder catch.

- Mason Foster was holding like mad on one play. Was definitely PI.

- Lawrence Wilson looks very good in coverage.

- Casey Matthews with a nice play in coverage on DeMarco Murray.

- Searcy showed some  horrible ball skills.

WR/CB 1 on 1′s

- Kendric Burney got burned deep by Niles Paul.

- Vincent Brown makes a very nice catch in tight coverage by Rashad Carmichael.

- Titus Young with a very nice route.

- Great coverage by Burney on Dwayne Harris.

- Quinton Carter did a good job of forcing Austin Pettis to the sideline.

- Titus Young drops a high pass. Looks really out of control running his routes.

- Titus Young makes a nice adjustment on a deep ball.

- Vincent Brown drops a pass that was pretty far outside. He could have had it though.

- Titus Young drops the reverse but then makes a nice move to make Quinton Carter miss.

11 on 11 Drills

- Jake Locker throws a nice pass to Vincent Brown who makes another great catch away from his body.

- Carmichael with great coverage on a go route.

- Titus Young catches a screen and probably would have taken it for a TD in a real game.

- Kaepernick makes a nice throw to Vincent Brown.

7 on 7 Drills

- Jake Locker throws high and Carmichael makes the gimmie pick.

- Locker throws the check down but again too high.

- Titus Young jumps offside. Come on man its practice lol.

OL/DL 1 on 1′s

- Gabe Carimi with a great pass-block in a 1 on 1 drill against Jeremy Beal.

- Solder sticks with Pierre Allen and his spin move in pass-pro.

- Solder with another nice block forcing Allen to take a wide angle.

- Ian Williams just threw Kowalski to the ground. Kowalski got him back on the next play though holding his ground.

- James Brewer with a very nice block on Ballard. Strong punch.

- Ryan Kerrigan destroys Solder with an outside fake and then inside.

- Solder with a good recovery on Beal after the fake inside move.

- Fusco with a very nice block on Fua throwing him to the ground.

- Pinkston with a nice punch

- Great lateral agility by Pinkston stopping Allen in his tracks.

- Carimi is having his way with Beal.

Overall Thoughts

There we’re quite a few impressive players today. Jason Pinkston, Nate Solder and Gabe Carimi all stood out in OL drills. Neither of them ever got beat in 1 on 1′s. They didn’t show a lot of the RB’s except for the receiving drill and it was hard to really gauge anyone on that. Some of the WR’s really stepped up though. Titus Young and Vincent Brown we’re probably the most impressive. Niles Paul also looked good. Austin Pettis looked really slow but he was able to get some separation. This was in 1 on 1 drills though so the offense for the most part is SUPPOSED to win. Rashad Carmichael was  the most impressive CB. He had a pick on an overthrow from Locker but had tight coverage all day.

There weren’t a lot of guys that stood out on the negative side. Lefeged didn’t look comfortable at all in coverage and was beaten deep a few times. Jeremy Beal was also having a rough day on the DL. He was routinely stopped but you could see he was working really hard. This only confirms my initial thoughts on him being just a high motor guy that will never be a pass-rush specialist in the NFL.

There wasn’t much to take away from this first practice as some of the QB’s were clearly rusty. They will get better though, as will everyone, so we should be able to see more plays being made in the upcoming days of practice.

East-West Shrine Game Notes

Here are the notes I took from watching the game live. Wrote done something on almost every play to see who made more of an impact. I’ll be re-watching this game later.
